J – Dilla : Hip-Hop Legend

J Dilla, whose real name is James Dewitt Yancey (February 7, 1974 in Detroit, Michigan – February 10, 2006 in Los Angeles, California), is an American composer, producer, disc jockey, rapper and singer, member of the group Slum Village until 2001.

Yancey, born on February 7, 1974 in Detroit, Michigan, is the oldest of four children: a sister (Martha) and two brothers, Earl and John, the latter of whom would later begin playing music under the name Illa J.

The family lived in a house near McDougall and Nevada on the east side of Detroit. He developed a vast musical knowledge thanks to his parents (his mother an opera singer and his father a jazz bass player). He began collecting vinyl records.

He then developed a passion for hip-hop. He met T3 and Baatin at Pershing High School in Detroit, and became friends with them through their mutual passion for rap battles. The three formed a group called Slum Village. He also began beatmaking using a simple tapedeck in his studio. During his younger years, he stayed in his studio alone with his collection of recordings, perfecting his work. He would later tell Pete Rock, I was trying to become like you.

Many people said he is the foundation of the main actual popular genre : lo-fi.

Where does Minimoog Voyager come from?

Minimoog Voyager is an analog synthesizer created by the American company Moog since 2002. A true analog monophonic synthesizer, it is an updated version of the legendary Minimoog produced from 1970 to 1982 by the Moog company.

It has a complete Midi implementation that allows it to be used as a polyphonic master keyboard, and the sound parameters are stored digitally. A pad has been introduced, allowing to play instantly with the sound parameters.
