Prince : the Pop Legend
Prince Rogers Nelson known as Prince, born June 7, 1958 in Minneapolis, Minnesota and died April 21, 2016 at age 57 in Chanhassen, Minnesota, is an American pop, funk, rock and RnB singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer.
He is also a dancer and actor.
Prince’s career began in 1978 and his discography includes over thirty studio albums released in less than forty years.
He has also written songs and produced albums for other artists, including :
- The Bangles
- Chaka Khan
- Patti LaBelle
- Madonna
- Sheila E
- Mavis Staples and The Time.
His biggest commercial success is Purple Rain (soundtrack to the film of the same name in which he plays the lead role), an album released in 1984 and sold twenty million copies3,4, containing, in addition to the title track, the hits Let’s Go Crazy and When Doves Cry. He is also the author of Sign o’ the Times, the soundtrack of the film Batman by Tim Burton, the hits Little Red Corvette, Kiss, Cream or Sexy MF. Sinéad O’Connor’s hit song, Nothing Compares 2 U, is also a Prince composition, as is Manic Monday by the Bangles.
A multi-instrumentalist : he plays some twenty instruments , excelling notably on guitar, bass, piano, drums and keyboards such as Oberheim OB-X. He has forged an aura of an ambitious, eclectic creator and an unparalleled stage reputation, with a penchant for dancing and soloing in concert.
He is also known for the use of sexually explicit references in some of his songs, as well as for the use of eccentric costumes.
Where does the Oberheim OB-X come from?
The Oberheim OB-X is an analog synth of the Oberheim company, marketed from 1979.
It is a monotimbral synthesizer, with 2 oscillators, a keyboard of 61 keys and 32 memories, for a polyphony of 4, 6 or 8 voices. Its marketing was stopped in 1981.
It was used by many groups and musicians, including :
- Prince
- Madonna
- Jean Michel Jarre…
