Dunnie : Making Hits With Burna Boy & Yemi Alade — Nigeria’s Most Notable Female Producer
Afroplug Podcast — Women’s Month Special | In collaboration with Pulp Mag
What does it take to break into one of the world’s most male-dominated industries — with no female role models, no blueprint, and no one who looks like you at the top?
For Dunnie, the answer was simple: do it anyway.
In this exclusive episode of the Afroplug Podcast, recorded in collaboration with Pulp Mag for Women’s Month, we sit down with Oladunni Lawal — singer, songwriter, and one of Nigeria’s most respected music producers — for an honest, inspiring conversation about her journey to the top of Afrobeats production.
Who Is Dunnie?
Born in Ibadan and raised across multiple Nigerian cities, Dunnie discovered music young — first through her family church, then through sheer curiosity and self-teaching. She is a graduate of Sociology from the University of Abuja, and a proud alumna of The Sarz Academy, the prestigious music training program founded by award-winning producer Sarz.
She plays guitar, piano, and drums. She writes, produces, and performs. And she has built a catalog that speaks for itself — with production credits alongside Burna Boy, Yemi Alade, Wande Coal, Falz, Niniola, Focalistic, Busiswa, and many more.
She was named Spotify’s EQUAL Africa ambassador, profiled by Global Citizen as one of Nigeria’s most influential women in music, and selected for YouTube’s Fifty Deep Music Class of 2024.
By every measure, Dunnie is a pioneer.
Breaking In With No Roadmap
When Dunnie decided to pursue music production, there were no Nigerian female producers to look up to. No local mentors. No visible path.
“When I wanted to be a producer, I could not find any woman to look up to,” she has said. “I was on my own for most of that phase.”
She found her way anyway — going from studio to studio, pitching beats to A&Rs, and building a reputation one placement at a time. The industry did not always take her seriously at first. But the music did the talking.
The Collaborations That Changed Everything
Getting placements with artists like Burna Boy and Yemi Alade is not luck — it is years of craft, persistence, and knowing your sound.
In this episode, Dunnie opens up about what it means to be in those rooms, how those collaborations came about, and what she learned from working alongside some of Afrobeats’ biggest names.
She also talks about her approach to production — how she balances her identity as both an artist and a producer, and how she finds the thread that connects her sound across genres and collaborators.
Changing the Game for Women
Dunnie’s career has always been bigger than her own discography. From the beginning, she has understood that being visible matters — that every placement, every credit, every interview is also a signal to younger women that this path is possible.
She is a constant collaborator with Audio Girl Africa, an NGO dedicated to fostering the inclusion of women in the Nigerian music industry. She mentors. She advocates. And she continues to build.
“My position in the Nigerian music industry is peculiar,” she has said, “as more women can see it’s possible to be producers, DJs, sound engineers.”
