In 2014, when Melo X released on the Web , unofficial remixes Beyoncé’s EP ” Yoncé X “, the Popstar’s team deleted the project. Then, he reuploaded it. However, he had no idea that Beyoncé would actually listen to it. But not only did Beyoncé listen, she liked it so much that she invited Melo X to work with her on her future Hit Projects over the years. This story is a great example of how a little producer creativity and initiative can go a long way
From the Lemonade album, to the art direction of the “On the Run” and ” The Formation World” Tour, and his participation in Beyoncé’s Lion King album, Music Producer Melo X has become an integral part of the Queen B’s production team and art direction over the years.
Wait first..who is Melo X?
Sean Rhoden alias MeLo-X, is a Jamaican Afro-American, DJ and Music producer born in 1985 in Brooklyn. Before collaborating with Beyoncé & Jay Z, he toured with Theophilus London as a DJ. On the side, he remixed songs by other artists, without permission.
He is also one half of the electro-caribbean duo Electric Punanny with Jasmine Solano. Their music is a fusion of electro-funk, dancehall and reggae. The duo began touring internationally and releasing music together in 2013.
in October 2015, MeLo-X released an EP entitled “Curate“. The EP took the form of a software app in which the listener can move a pointer to change the rhythm and reverb. MeLo-X calls the octahedron-shaped pointer the “infinity stone.” Songs on the EP feature performances by Little Simz, Raury, and Kilo Kish.
Melo X & Beyoncé : Mainstream Success Collaborations
In 2014, MeLo-X remixed unofficialy 5 songs from Beyoncé’s album Beyoncé, the project titled Yoncé-X, which MeLo-X posted on various websites such as SoundCloud and YouTube.
Beyoncé’s label kept getting the remix album removed from each new hosting site for copyright infringement. But after seeing the uploaded video of “Drunk in Lust,” MeLo-X’s unauthorized remix of “Drunk in Love, Beyoncé invited him to make music for Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s On the Run Tour, a headlining tour.
MeLo-X says, “They already had the story and the outline of the tour. The whole story is like watching a movie and it’s told through the music they created… We would sit down and talk about the sounds. Then I would go and create something. It was a mix of my ideas, with Beyoncé and Jay Z. I was trying to complete them. I was trying to find a sweet spot between what I do and what they wanted.”
After that, MeLo-X collaborated with Beyoncé and Jay-Z by writing 2 songs for Beyoncé’s Lemonade album, “Hold-Up” and “Sorry“.
Hold Up” was certified Gold in the United States and Australia, and “Sorry” was certified Platinum in the United States. MeLo-X said he came across the song “Hold Up” after much of it was written by Father John Misty and MNEK.
MeLo-X wrote some of the lyrics for the song, and provided background vocals, saying, “I like how my vocals were used because it feels like a sample underneath his voice during the chorus.
The song “Sorry” was co-written and co-produced by MeLo-X and Wynter Gordon. In addition, MeLo-X composed the music for Beyoncé’s visual album Lemonade.
MeLo-X also created the music and sounds for Beyoncé’s The Formation World Tour.
The following year, PartyNextDoor hired MeLo-X to bring the same visual style to their Summer’s Over Tour.
MeLo-X produced and performed on a remix of the song “Find Your Way Back” on the Deluxe version of Beyonce’s album The Lion King.
