First, what is Trap Music?
Trap is a afro-american musical genre trend from the Dirty South, which emerged in the early 2000s in the Southern United States. It is characterized by its lyrical content and a distinctive sound, related in particular to the heavy use of the Roland TR-808 drum machine kick (characterized by the greater presence of Sub-bass), sixteenth notes, triplets and other faster time divisions with hi-hat sounds, synthesizer layers and virtual string ensembles.
In 2012, a new stream of prominent electronic music producers and DJs began to incorporate elements of trap into their creations. This is helping to expand its popularity among electronic music fans. A number of stylistic offshoots of trap are developing. During the second half of 2012, it is growing in popularity and is having a notable impact on electronic dance music.
The term “Trap” was originally used to refer to places where drug dealing took place. Fans and critics began referring to these rappers, whose lyrics were primarily about drug dealing, as Trap rappers.
In Complex magazine, journalist David Drake wrote, “Trap in the early 2000s was not a style but an actual reference to drug scenes,” and the term was later adopted to describe “music made in these places.
UGK and Three 6 Mafia were among the first rappers to popularize Trap music. The lyrics include themes of ghetto life, drug dealing, and the struggle for success.
3 Southern rappers such as T.I., Gucci Mane, and Young Jeezy have contributed to the development of Trap music. They helped expand the popularity of the genre, and recordings began to appear on mixtapes and local radio stations.
Trap Music : Commercial Success
In 2003, Trap Music began to emerge as a mainstream genre. In 2003, Trap music began to emerge following the success of a number of albums and singles released at that time. T.I.’s second studio album, Trap Muzik, was a major commercial success, selling over 2.1 million copies. The album’s lead track, 24’s, was selected by EA for the video game Need for Speed: Underground.
In 2005, Trap music shook up the established order of music trends with the release of Young Jeezy’s Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 1011. The album hit number two on the Billboard 200, selling 172,000 copies in its first week of release and was later certified platinum by the RIAA for selling over one million copies.
Early Trap producers include Drumma Boy, Shawty Redd, Zaytoven and DJ Toomp.
By 2010, Trap recordings were competing with the top of the Hip-Hop charts. Producer Lex Luger experienced tremendous popularity and dedicated himself to producing over 260 tracks between 2010 and 2011, including a number of tracks from famous artists, such as Rick Ross’ B.M.F. (Blowin’ Money Fast) and MC Hammer, Kanye West’s H-A-M and See Me Now, and Waka Flocka Flame’s Hard in da Paint. Luger’s trademark sound has since been widely adopted by rap producers, attempting to replicate his success, and he is often credited with popularizing the sound of modern Trap.
Since 2011, many modern trap producers have become popular, including 808 Mafia, Metro Boomin, Southside, Sonny Digital and Young Chop. Some producers are expanding their spectrum to other genres such as R&B (Mike WiLL Made It) and electronic music (AraabMuzik). In 2012, trap tracks, released by rappers like Chief Keef and Future, spawned an epidemic. Keef’s I Don’t Like and Love Sosa get over 30 million views on YouTube. I Don’t Like inspired Kanye West to create a remix of the song, including it on his GOOD Music compilation Cruel Summer. GQ’s Stelios Phili calls trap music the “sound of Hip-hop 2012”.
Lady Gaga recorded a trap-inspired track called Jewels ‘n Drugs on her 2013 album, Artpop, calling on rappers T.I., Too $hort and Twista. The mix of pop and trap was met with mixed reviews from the trade press7,8. In September 2013, American pop singer Katy Perry released a song titled Dark Horse collaborating with rapper Juicy J, in her album Prism, which distilled trap flavors9,10. In 2018, the two Colombian singers Shakira and Maluma released a joint track called Trap. The latter previously released a single 4 Babies in 2017 on his album F.A.M.E.
