What is Funk and Soul Music?

Funk is a musical genre that emerged in the mid-1960s in the United States in the wake of the hard bop movement and developed during the 1960s and 1970s. The term funk comes from the Anglo-American slang word funky, which literally means “smelly”, “sweaty”, an insult traditionally addressed to blacks by WASPs and later taken up by black artists such as Horace Silver in his song Opus de Funk (1953).

Coming mainly from Soul and Jazz, funk is characterized by the predominance of the rhythm section (guitar, bass, drums) which plays syncopated patterns, the frequent presence of brass or saxophones on rhythmic punctuations (riffs) or solos and, in general, by the large place given to instruments.

In the mid-1960s, funk came alive from its rhythm and blues and soul roots, with lyrics emphasizing black advocacy and ghetto hardship. James Brown is considered the originator of urban, protest funk, first with the 1965 King Records track Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag, followed by the famous Sex Machine in 1970. Brown was closely followed by groups such as Dyke and The Blazers or Archie Bell and The Drells, Sly and the Family Stone, The Counts, The J.B.’s, Wilson Pickett, as well as The Meters, a group from New Orleans, a formerly French city whose musical history and annual carnival predisposed it to be one of the cradles of funk. The instrumentation is stripped down, the playing is unbridled and abundant, at the crossroads of rhythm and blues, soul and jazz.
