What is G-Funk ?

G-funk, which means “Gangsta funk,” is a West Coast gangsta rap movement that became popular in the first half of the 1990s. Rapper and producer Dr. Dre , a member of the founding gangsta rap group N.W.A, popularized the style during the 1990s, largely through his use of samples from Funkadelic, Parliament, Ohio Players, George Clinton, Zapp, and other funk groups from the 1970s and 1980s, and synthesizers such as the Prophet 5, Juno-106, ARP 2600, and Moog, particularly in the music on the 1992 album The Chronic.

G-funk songs are based on melodic grooves, as opposed to hardcore rap from New York. The instrumentals are mainly made up of Funk or Soul sound samples, synthesizer sounds, a moderate flow and often accompanied by a chorus sung by a woman or soul/funk godfather like Marvin Gaye or Enois Scroggins.

And often composed of big synthesizer bass and leads (high and long sounds) and the famous vocoder (robotic voice), talk box like Roger Troutman in California Love of 2pac and Dr. Dre, without forgetting the sounds coming from the soul and several forms of percussion like the conga.
